Five on Friday

TGIF!! I hope everyone had a fantastic week! It's been arctic tundra cold in the STL area. My feet are always freezing even with socks and slippers.

1. Blue Monday. Or Tuesday.
I was feeling down earlier in the week. No one reason, just glum. I pulled out some old tricks to help lighten my mood. Music, natural light, snuggles with the small boy. Thank goodness he isn't too old for that yet. I know the time is fast approaching.
I popped in and cranked up one of the new records we picked up on Valentine's Day:

2. Snow Days!
I mentioned a couple weeks ago my love for snow days. Imagine how excited I was when the kiddos were off school two extra days this week plus the holiday Monday! I was so thankful to spend more time with the small boy. I wish the big kids would have been here. I feel like most of the snow days happen when they are at their father's house!
Of course, small boy had to go sledding. We only had a couple inches of snow, but we have a great hill for sledding on the side of the house that's very steep so we only needed a little snow.

3. I mentioned last week the Kate Spade Donut collection, and boy did Mister come through in a big way.

He even bought me a cute aqua colored wallet for the purse since my other was too large for this one. I blame my purse addiction on him. He's an enabler. I'm not going to complain. :)

4. While we were out getting a wallet, Mister bought me a new coat. I adore it. I don't have a nicer jacket and this one from the Michael Kors outlet is adorable.

5. Valentine's Day
It was awesome! Mister loved his cigar torch and cigar cutter. He got me the most adorable mugs.

We ate a yummy breakfast, went record shopping, grabbed a cup of coffee and brought home our favorite pizza for movie night with the kiddos. It was awesome.

How was your week?

Protein Pancakes

Thanks to being frugal lazy the small boy and I decided not to attend a fundraising event for the high school at a local fast food establishment. This left me a meal short. The boy was content with fish sticks, but I am not a fan and wanted something healthier.

I did a search for protein pancakes and stumbled on a list from The first recipe on the list looked simple enough. No frou frou ingredients and no crazy prep. My recipe is modified from the original as I did not actually measure the egg whites because.... I don't know.

1/4c cottage cheese
1/2c oats
6 medium egg whites
1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder

Throw everything in the blender. Make pancakes. Eat.

The batter was very thin and I was nervous about how these would turn out. They do not fluff up either. My recipe made ten pancakes and I ate 5. This recipe is a keeper. If you're craving a golden, fluffy pancake, this isn't the recipe you're going to make. If you're looking to add a healthy recipe to your breakfast routine, this is it. I was pleasantly surprised. I cooked up some frozen berries with a little honey instead of regular syrup as a topping. What a treat! And check out the nutrition info:

Experimenting with new recipes makes me nervous, but I'm glad I ventured outside of my little box for this!

Five on Friday

Finally! I had hoped to get a post or two up this week, but I was a little under weather
. I'm feeling better although you can't tell by my voice.

I'm LOVING these two products from the 450 sexy hair line. I use the blow out when my hair is damp and the protect when I'm straightening. They leave my hair super soft without being heavy feeling or greasy. Top notch stuff.

Kate Spade + Darcel Donut Coin Purse
I was goofing around on Pinterest and discovered this little gem. Seriously. How perfectly, adorable is this thing?? It's from a line put out a couple years ago. I'm obsessed with pretty much everything on it, but finding any of the items is nearly impossible. I'm definitely going to keep an eye out! These are must haves for Kate Spade donut lovers.

MISSY ELLIOTT!!!! !!!! !!!!
I've loved Missy for a zillion years or something. You can imagine the fit I had when she made an appearance during the Super Bowl half time show. And to think, I was going to do laundry and skip it. I'm pretty sure Mister thought I was having a seizure. The funny thing? A week before, I was pulling up her videos to introduce the girl to Missy.
I've been listening to a lot more Missy since then. I cannot believe I hadn't added her back to my lists sooner! Shame on me.

SweetTart Hearts
I have been craving SweetTarts for a while so I picked some up the other day. These are way better than those OTHER heart candies popular at Valentine's Day.

Reading and lattes
I've gotten back into reading over the last month. I still have a difficult time starting new stories, though. This particular book is ok so far. The way scenes are transitioned is odd to me so I end up going back and rereading portions to make sure I haven't skipped something.
The espresso maker Mister and I got for our anniversary gift is AWESOME! He's gotten quite skilled at making these puppies, and I'm highly adept at drinking them up!

I hope everyone had a great week and you have an even better weekend!

Five on Friday

TGIF, folks!

Maybe it was the headaches, but this week seemed to draaaaag by. It wasn't bad, just long. It's finally Friday! We don't have any big plans other than a birthday party to attend Sunday. I'm excited to spend some time with all of my kiddos and the mister.

Here's five things on my mind this week:

1. Amazon Prime.
The best money ever spent. From two day shipping, to music, instant videos and photo storage, I'm smitten.

2. Old Fashioned Notes
I love my technology, but when it comes to notes, lists and the like, give me good old fashioned paper and pen.

3. Valentine's Day
I love Valentine's Day. Yes. I know it's a fake holiday, but that doesn't mean I can't love it. :) I'm really excited about the gift I got for Mister. I think he'll love it. Well, I hope so any way. Last year was by far the best Valentine's Day ever.
On top of him arriving early, I got to have a big breakfast with him and he gave me the sweetest Valentines. One card for every year of grade school we didn't spend together. I'd commented about how I'd never received ones from a boy especially for me. I assumed that was normal and he thought I was crazy. If you know me, you know there were lots of happy tears. Such a sap.

4. Snow Days
The kids didn't have school Thursday. It was so nice to stay snuggled in bed for a little longer. When I was working, I loathed snow days. Snow days for preschool teachers are awful. You have a couple dozen kids coming you weren't planning on having. Scrambling to find teachers to cover is nearly impossible. Poor parents are stressed because their routines are thrown off. Whew. I'm so happy I'm lucky enough to stay home now.

5. Protein Shakes
I make one every day. I use a vanilla powder so I have a zillion options for mix-ins: spinach, strawberries, blueberries, peaches, cocoa powder, oatmeal. I tried skipping one earlier this week. It resulted in me starving and nearly eating my arm. (Ok. Not really, but you get the point!)

Love Yourself, Ladies

Today was a weird, emotional day for me.

Earlier in the week, I'd planned my workouts for the week. Today was a run day. While I was packing my stuff, I noticed the pain in my hip/lower back was pretty persistent. I decided while walking out the door I would rest. I've aggravated a muscle and I need to address it. Rest, ice, stretche. Boring.

I haven't been taking a lot of rest days, so I was little panicky. Clearly, not exercising ONE DAY would mean I'll put on 30 pounds. I crave a good workout. I want to hurt. I want to sweat. I want my heart to explode from my chest.

As if being anxious all day wasn't enough I was so hungry. All. Day. My pre-workout snack is oatmeal. I always have a protein shake after a workout. I didn't have the shake because I didn't work out. Boy, have I paid for it. I was starving all day despite drinking water and eating lots of protein. I was so hungry my stomach hurt. Hands to the sky I wasn't starving myself. I'd eaten a reasonable amount (logged it all to be sure I wasn't crazy) but since I hadn't had that extra pack of protein to start, I think I was off.

So, I'm anxious because I took a rest day and I'm ravenous. Naturally, I'd have a horrible body image day. I noticed some new curves (or ones I'd lost and apparently found). I was really angry at myself for not caring for so long.

While I was on Twitter, I saw a tweet from a new organization about a plus size model appearing in an ad in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. Really? Seriously??

The model's name is Ashley Graham. And she rocks. We all rock.

Yes. I've put on some weight, but I'm still healthy and that's what is important. I need to love this body. It's not perfect, but it's mine. I need to stop obsessing about what I had. It's gone. I might get it back. I might not. I can be this size and still be healthy, and that's ok.

We are all beautiful.

Wednesday Weigh-In

This week: +1.4
Last week: didn't weigh
Total: -3.2 (-28.8 from the very beginning)

I don't even know what happened. I did not eat well two weeks ago, but I've been very good this past week.

This was a blow to the gut.  I'm not trying hard enough. I've got a good plan of action. I'm going to make it work.

What I'm doing to do:
-Monthly weigh-ins instead of weekly. I like to see progress each week, but I can't handle it mentally if the scale doesn't show me what I want.
- Exercise at least five days a week even if it's just walking on the treadmill.
- Not eat back calories burned unless I need them. I'll try to bank those calories and only use them if I'm really hungry.
- Drink more water. Jen is a runner/mom/blogger I follow on Twitter. She's recently challenged herself to drink a gallon of water a day for a month. I decided "Why not?"
- Exercise on the day of my cheat meal. This will require a bit more planning, but I think it's doable.
- Continue lifting weights. The big baby in me wanted to ditch weights and only do cardio until I drop some pounds. A brief search on the interwebs said I should stick with the weights, so that's what I'm doing.

I'm picking myself up and dusting myself off. This was a bump in the road. I hoped I'd hit this bump a little farther down the road, but that's life. I'm not a quitter. I can do this. I will.

Well, Nobody Told Me That!

I'm getting older. I'm 33. I'm certainly not OLD, yet. Just older. More refined.I've noticed over the past few years several things going on with my body that kind of took me off guard.

Middle of the night bathroom breaks- This has been pretty much been a norm since being pregnant. Once you have kids, your bladder is pretty much shot. I cannot recall the last time I was able to sleep through the night without waking to use the restroom.

Acne- Seriously? I'm 33! I didn't have terrible skin when I was a teen. I'd have some mild acne outbreaks occasionally, but nothing too severe. (Thank goodness!) I've noticed more and more outbreaks the older I get. I hope this is just a phase.....

Change in cycles- ****TMI ALERT**** In health the class, they tell you what to expect when nature starts to take its course. I do not recall them telling me that things would change with age! Debilitating cramps. Unpredictable cycles. Awful PMS symptoms. To the point that if I didn't know better, I'd swear I was pregnant. I did NOT sign up for this!

Hair- It could be all in my head, but I swear my hair is getting dull. It seemed so shiny when I was younger. Of course, this can be changed by a trip to the salon. :)

Weight- I knew I'd have a harder time losing weight the older I got, but what I didn't realize is that you put it on in different places. The 20 or so I put on last year? Right around the midsection. I was accustomed to seeing my hips and chest get larger when the pounds come on. Sheesh!

I'm learning to accept the things I cannot change and adjust to this getting older thing. I can't stop it, so I may as well just roll with it!

Have you noticed any changes you weren't quite expecting?
